Like many other persons of Indian origin in the US, I have struggled to find balance between my Indian and American identities. Having grown up in the US, negotiating an American identity has not posed many problems. However, I have spent most of my adult life attempting to understand my Indian identity. Part of this search led me to major in South Asian Studies, which opened up the possibility of taking classes such as Hindi and Indian history.
Christianity has a rather sketchy reputation amongst most Hindus I know. Many of us have heard about the underhanded proselytizing tactics used by zealous missionaries in India, or perhaps we've come across rather explicit declarations made by the Pope and other prominent Christians (read: Pat Robertson) publicly asserting the need to ‘save’ India's Hindu population. Over time it begins to sound like a broken record, but the appalling language and assumptions underlying evangelist propaganda can rattle even the most tolerant among us.
