Dear Swamiji,

My parents are constantly telling me that I should pray, but I really see no reason for it. I ave asked them repeatedly what will praying do for me AND they don’t have an answer. I mean what’s the point in praying to God, for example, before a test; it’s not like he’s going to swoop down and take the test for me. I hope you can help.

Being born in the Latin American country of Venezuela, I was raised a Catholic. Even though there are such diverse faiths in Venezuela as Judaism, Islam, various Afro-Caribbean religions, and different denominations of Christianity, the vast majority of people in my country are still Catholic, and my family is no exception. However, after I turned 18, I realized that Catholicism did not make sense to me, so I left it. For five years I remained unbound to any religion or belief system, although I still believed in a Divinity and practiced meditation.
